Day1 – Ushuaia to Puerto Williams to Puerto Navarino

Day one took us from Ushuaia (Argentina) eastward along the Beagle to Puerto Williams in Chile, where we were met early afternoon by the Chilean authorities to process our entry to Chile. A rushed trip into town was thwarted by it being afternoon siesta so few places were open. Time to photograph ourselves in front of the preserved bow from Shakletons boat and race back to the boat as we received clearance in record time. Back up the Beagle to drop anchor at Puerto Navarino – a small Chilean base on the opposite (Chilean) side of the Beagle Channel to Ushuaia – the lights of Ushuaia clearly visible in the distance. An all day trip to return several kms across the channel from where we started.

Time for a shore landing and a walk to the top of the hill to look over the Beagle and stretch our legs. Our first experience of soft Patagonian soil and prickly plants –no fun grabbing a handful of foliage Amazing to find a ‘tin’ gun at the top of the hill – wooden base and a tin barrel – a mock gun, unsure of its age. Brett found a shell midden but we were short on time to check it out. A clear evening with the moon and lights of Ushuaia. No wind, a flat sea and a good nights sleep.
